What is osteopathic medicine?

Osteopathic medicine is a complete system of medical care founded on the philosophy of treating the whole person, not just the symptoms. It emphasizes the interrelationships of structure and function, and the body's ability to heal itself. Osteopathic medicine has a history of more than 125 years. It was started by Andrew Taylor Still, M.D., D.O., who developed a new approach to health care in response to the poor medical care of his time. Osteopathic Medicine can trace its roots back to Hippocrates, the founder of modern medicine. Dr. Still expanded the Hippocratic concept of the unity of the parts of the body and developed the concept of "wellness" that we hear so much about today.
DOs recognize that the body is inherently capable of healing itself, though it must constantly fight physical, emotional, chemical and nutritional "stressors" to maintain a state of wellness. DOs believe in educating you about good health and avoidance of disease. DOs recognize that medication, surgery, and often OMT are necessary elements of treatment.

What is osteopathic manipulative medicine?

Osteopathic manipulative medicine, or OMM, is hands-on care. It involves using the hands to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness or injury. There are many types of OMM techniques that can be used to treat your problem, such as muscle energy, counterstrain, craniosacral, Still technique and high velocity-low amplitude (HVLA). One or several of these techniques can be used to diagnose and treat your particular ailment. When appropriate it can be used along with, or in place of, medication or surgery. OMM is sometimes called OMT, or Osteopathic manipulative therapy.
OMM can be used to treat problems of the muscles and joints of the body, and can also be used to help treat many medical problems such as asthma, sinus problems, and migraines.

What is sports medicine?

Sports medicine promotes lifelong fitness and wellness, and encourages prevention of illness and injury. Sports medicine also works to minimize disability from injury and time away from sports, work or school. Sports medicine doctors are trained in the non-operative treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. The vast majority of work and sports injuries do not require surgery. Sports medicine works together with physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic trainers, and, if necessary, orthopedic surgeons, to design the best treatment program for musculoskeletal injuries.
